Dental Bonding Q & A

What is dental bonding?

Dental bonding is a procedure that improves minor cosmetic imperfections in your teeth. Dr. Cho fixes these imperfections by painting a thin layer of tooth-colored composite over one or more of your teeth. The process is called “bonding” because the composite permanently bonds to your teeth.

What conditions can dental bonding correct?

Dental bonding has a wide range of uses. With bonding, Dr. Cho can:

  • Fill in small gaps between your teeth
  • Change the size or shape of your teeth
  • Restore teeth that are chipped, cracked, decayed, or discolored

Bonding also has many non-cosmetic functions. It’s frequently used to treat cavities, and can also be applied to protect tooth roots that are exposed after suffering from gum recession.

Why should I get bonding?

Bonding is an incredibly cost-effective treatment that can get you noticeable results instantly. It’s also an excellent option for patients who want a noninvasive method for improving their teeth. Unless you’re cleaning out tooth decay, bonding doesn’t require the removal of any enamel from your teeth, unlike crowns, bridges, and veneers.

Bonding does have a few disadvantages, though. Compared to other restoration options, bonding is less stain resistant, doesn’t last as long, and is more prone to chipping. Because of this, Dr. Cho recommends reserving bonding for teeth that are in low areas of bite pressure, like in the front of your mouth.

What happens during dental bonding?

Dental bonding is a relatively simple procedure that Dr. Cho can do in a single hour-long office visit. It doesn’t require any local anesthesia unless you’re getting a cavity filled.

Dr. Cho uses a shade guide to pick a color for your bonding material that best matches the rest of your smile. He then etches the surface of your tooth to make it more absorbent, which helps the bonding material stick better.

With your tooth prepared, Dr. Cho applies a putty-like resin and shapes it to blend in with the rest of your smile. Once your bonding is properly shaped, he shines an ultraviolet light which initiates a chemical reaction that makes the bonding material harden.

Because the procedure is so noninvasive, you can resume your normal activities as soon as you leave the office. You won’t have to worry about any recovery or downtime.
